ICE APPLIED OVER YOUR DRESSINGS MAY HELP DECREASE SOME PAIN AND SWELLING FOR THE FIRST 24-72 HOURS FOLLOWING SURGERY.
MILKING YOUR DRAINS:
It is important that you take care of your drain(s) daily. You will be instructed by the recovery room staff on how to “milk” or “run” the drain tubes daily. You are to “milk” or “run” the drain tubes to get the remaining fluid from the tubes by running a pen or pencil from top to bottom of drain tube stretching the tubing.
MEASURING YOUR DRAINS:
Empty drain(s) three times a day. Hold the bulb in hand, then open the bulb by gently pulling the drain plug. Screw the syringe onto the bulb. Pull back the plunger on the syringe. Then look at the measurement on the side of the syringe and document, in cc/ml, the amount of drainage on the flow sheet provided. Empty contents into the toilet and flush. Squeeze the bulb and replace plug spout with the bulb compressed. BRING THE DRAINAGE CHART TO ALL APPOINTMENTS AFTER SURGERY UNTIL THE DRAINS HAVE BEEN REMOVED.Common Questions
